Marriage Communication Skills: Therapist Tips for Building Healthy Relationships
Outline - Thirteen Tips for Creating Healthy Relationships
Hi, I’m Joe, the founder of Dignity Counseling Collective. I’m grateful you’re here reading our first blog post. Your curiosity and desire to grow tell me something important about you — you’re someone who wants to strengthen yourself and your relationships. My hope is that this blog becomes a place that both exceeds your expectations and keeps you hungry for more.
Healthy relationships are built on mutuality, and your desire to grow fuels my passion for equipping people to navigate life’s joys and challenges. I’d love to hear what resonates with you, what these posts stir up, how you apply them, and what changes you begin to notice. Let’s grow together, celebrate progress, and learn from the inevitable stumbles along the way.
This first series will focus on communicating effectively in relationships, especially in marriage. In over sixteen years of counseling, I’ve never had a couple come in without naming communication and conflict resolution as core goals. Over time, I’ve developed what I call the “13 Tips for Effective Communication,” drawn from empirically supported research and biblically grounded principles. When practiced with a heart oriented toward connection, these tips consistently deepen closeness and emotional safety.
What I love about these tips is that they aren’t simply about learning better communication techniques. They’re rooted in attachment theory, neuroscience, and cognitive interventions that strengthen secure attachment, regulate the nervous system, and reshape the inner narratives that distort how we see ourselves and each other. When our bodies stay regulated, and our prefrontal cortex remains online, we can stay connected, curious, and collaborative — even in hard conversations.
